THE BELLA LUCIA STORY
Shortly after being diagnosed with Celiac disease, Maryann Petta Cook, the owner of Bella Lucia, quickly realized there was a need for ready-to-eat gluten-free baked goods that could actually be enjoyed. In 2009, to address this need, she founded Bella Lucia, named after her late mother, this translates to “Beautiful Lucy”. Bringing together her baking experience gained from growing up in an Italian household and the finest ingredients she could source she started her business with the firm belief that there was a better way to eat gluten-free without giving up flavour and taste. She realized her dream by focussing on a product she knew very well – Italian Pizzelle cookies and the result of her efforts: Simply Delizioso!
What started as a cottage industry business, bringing authenticity of Italian heritage into both the name and recipe, has quickly grown into a national brand establishing itself as the only producer of gluten-free pizzelle cookies in North America.Bella Lucia’s Pizzelle cookies can now be found in over 500 stores throughout the US including Wegmans (all stores since 2011) and Whole Foods (Mid-Atlantic & Mid-West).
THE SECRET TO THEIR SUCCESS
Incorporated in 2011, Bella Lucia is still lead and controlled by Maryann and they’re still making their delicious gluten-free pizzelle cookies two at a time by hand using only the finest ingredients they can source!
In 2017 their use of great ingredients and handmade quality was recognized by the Fancy Food Show and by the Specialty Food Association. Following an appraisal by a panel of judges, ranging from notable chefs to major buyers in the food industry, they were the recipient of the prestigious Sofi Silver Award in the gluten-free snack category for their Anise Pizzelle cookies. This was a great accomplishment considering they placed second in between two products of an international company established in 1921!
