ORGANIC ISLANDS - IT'S NOT JUST A BRAND NAME

Organic Islands is actually based and operates on the Greek island of Naxos located in the southern region of the Aegean Sea known as the Cyclades.   Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades and also the most fertile and self-sufficient one of this region making agriculture an important economic sector for the island.

After moving back to his island place of birth, Nikos Hatziandreou, armed with a love of the earth and plants in general, decided to focus on the production of medicinal and aromatic plants.  This was an easy decision considering what he was surrounded by - fertile soil, prolonged dry periods, abundant sunshine and the cooling effect of the Aegean wind.  All these elements formed the basis of starting his company in 2010.  The vision of the company was, and still is, to highlight and communicate the benefits of organic farming practices to local communities on both Naxos and the surrounding Cyclades islands. With this vision in mind he named his company Organic Islands.

 

THE OPERATION

Starting with an initial planting of only Lemon balm the operation has now grown to include 15 herb varieties and citrus fruits cultivated on 40 hectares (100 acres) of company owned land in Naxos and the mountains of Northern Greece.  A pioneer in its field, Organic Islands combines tradition with modern technology to produce top quality products that reveal the unique terroir of Greece the land of its roots. 

Cultivation is done in accordance with the European Regulations on organic farming and it’s certified as an organic producer by DIO (GR-BIO-01) and is also accredited by DIO in meeting and following the requirements of the ISO 22000:2005 Food Safety Management System. Herbs are harvested exclusively by hand, at the correct time period for each plant, and the leaves and blossoms are dried the same day to ensure their essential oils, distinct aromas and flavours are maintained.  The loose leaf and caffeine-free herbal infusions and herbs are packaged on site in colourful and distinctive Organic Island tea tins and craft paper pouches.

AN AWARD WINNING PRODUCER

Its strict adherence to certified organic practices and commitment to best in class quality at every stage of production and packaging has earned it a 1 Star Award in each of 2014, 2015 and 2016 for four of its products at the Guild of Fine Food’s “Great Taste Awards” in the U.K.  This 1 Star accolade designated its Organic Hyssop, Ambrosia, Nostalgia and Fantasia products as “Simply Delicious”. In addition to this, by winning these awards for a minimum of three years in the preceding five years Organic Islands is now also recognized as a “Great Taste Producer” telling the world that it’s “a producer with a proven track record of winning Great Taste”.
